Jermaine Dupri Sues Sony Music Over $18 Million in Unpaid Royalties
On July 7, 2026, legendary producer and executive Jermaine Dupri filed a formal lawsuit against Sony Music Entertainment (SME). The legal action centers on claims of systemic underpayment of royalties spanning several years, affecting both Dupri personally and his influential label, So-So Def Recordings.
The dispute involves a vast catalog of music, including iconic albums from R&B superstars Usher and Mariah Carey. Beyond these major acts, the lawsuit encompasses royalties tied to a wide array of artists who helped define the So-So Def sound, such as Kris Kross, Xscape, Bow Wow, Da Brat, J-Kwon, and Bone Crusher.
The financial stakes are significant, with the lawsuit alleging that the total amount of unpaid royalties reaches approximately $18 million. According to reports, the legal filing accuses Sony Music Entertainment of employing a “systemic pattern” of “contemptuous accounting practices” to avoid fulfilling their contractual obligations to artists.
In a statement regarding the 32-year relationship between his label and the music giant, Dupri’s legal counsel noted, “As it turns out, many of SME’s dealings with So-So Def have not been lawful and have harmed So-So Def in its business.” This high-profile case is expected to reignite critical industry conversations regarding transparency and fair payout practices for creators working with major record labels.
