Dame Dash Claims Jay-Z Cut Him Off to Cultivate ‘Mogul’ Image
Dame Dash is revisiting his long-running feud with Hip-Hop Mogul Jay-Z, alleging his former Roc-A-Fella Records partner once claimed their association threatened his ambitions as a serious businessman. The tension between the two former collaborators remains a defining chapter in the history of the label.
During a recent episode of “Quiet Part Out Loud,” Dash recalled a pivotal meeting involving music executive L.A. Reid. According to Dash, Reid requested his presence because he specifically wanted a businessman in the room. Dash claims that during this interaction, Jay-Z articulated a desire to shift his public identity.
“He was like, ‘I want to be known as a businessman,’” Dash recalled. “Like, flat-out said, ‘I want to be known as a businessman and I can’t be known as a businessman with you next to me.’”
Dash noted that he rejected the sentiment immediately, telling the rapper, “I don’t even want to be next to you, n****. You’re not a businessman.”
The former Roc-A-Fella executive went on to question the rapper’s actual role within the business empire that followed the label’s initial success. Dash characterized him as a “figurehead,” suggesting that industry professionals like Steve Stoute were the true architects behind major corporate decisions.
Reflecting on a Fractured Partnership
Dash did not hold back when discussing the financial disputes that have plagued their relationship for years, specifically referencing the fallout surrounding the 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt. “Jay ain’t st. We all know that. And I’ll say it,” Dash stated. “And y’all could tell me [I’m a] chatty patty when he fks up $40 million of my own money.”
The music executive also recalled instances where he felt deliberately excluded, such as when he claimed the rapper declined to walk a red carpet with him. Dash alleged that his former partner surrounded himself with a “conglomerate of people” who conspired against him. “He’s over there with them, I think, because he needs the crew,” Dash added. “He can’t do nothing on his own.”
The public dispute between the two has persisted for decades, with the rapper even referencing Dash during a freestyle at the Roots Picnic earlier this year. As both men continue to navigate their respective legacies, their fractured history remains a focal point for hip-hop historians and fans alike.
