AZ Chike Addresses L.A. Rappers’ Struggles Following Kendrick Lamar’s ‘GNX’
AZ Chike is making it clear that his appearance on Kendrick Lamar‘s GNX was an opportunity, not the finish line. During the sold-out Dallas stop of his No Rest For The Wicked Tour on Wednesday, Oct. 7, the South Central Los Angeles rapper reflected on the aftermath of Lamar’s blockbuster album and the challenges facing L.A. artists who landed coveted features.
Before performing “Game Time,” AZ Chike acknowledged that Lamar’s 2024 project introduced him to listeners who might not have discovered his music otherwise. He appeared on “Peekaboo,” alongside Lamar, Dody6 and Hitta J3, earning a spot on one of the year’s most talked-about hip-hop releases.
“I know a lot of people first found about me through GNX’s ‘Peekabo.’ Make some noise for my brother Kendrick Fuckin’ Lamar. It was a lot of speculation just as far what the artists was gonna do after the album, right. And, unfortunately, for a lot of people it was game over, but for Chizzle, it was game time.”
Navigating the Post-GNX Landscape
AZ Chike’s remarks touched on the pressure surrounding the Los Angeles rappers featured on GNX. Collaborating with Lamar brought significant visibility, but that exposure also raised expectations about what each artist would accomplish next. A high-profile appearance could introduce them to millions of listeners, but converting that attention into sustained momentum remained another challenge.
His contrast between “game over” and “game time” offered a confident assessment of his own trajectory. Rather than viewing his GNX appearance as the peak of his career, AZ Chike framed it as the start of another opportunity to establish himself.
The rapper also made sure to acknowledge Lamar, encouraging the Dallas audience to show love for his collaborator before launching into his performance. For AZ Chike, the takeaway was straightforward: A major co-sign can open doors, but the work that follows determines what happens next. His comments positioned the GNX collaboration as a launching pad, underscoring his determination to turn newfound recognition into lasting success on his own terms.
