Sexxy Red Addresses Unpaid Royalties Lawsuit Involving Late Producer Tay Keith
In an ongoing legal dispute, rapper Sexxy Red has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit concerning alleged unpaid royalties. The case centers on 13 tracks produced by the late Tay Keith for the artist throughout 2024. Seeking to clarify her position, Sexxy Red has submitted an emotional letter to the presiding judge, aiming to distance herself from the administrative complexities of music industry compensation.
Clarifying the Label’s Role in Compensation
In her correspondence, Sexxy Red emphasized that artists typically lack direct control over the financial disbursements made to producers, noting that such matters are primarily the responsibility of the record label. She expressed a desire to resolve the misunderstanding, highlighting the positive professional and personal relationship she shared with the late producer. “Tay Keith and I are great working partners and even greater friends,” she stated in the letter. “If the label owes him money, I’m sure they have started the process to get him paid.”
The Reality of Music Recoupment
Beyond the specific claims, the artist provided insight into the standard industry practice of recoupment, explaining that she herself has yet to receive royalties for several of their collaborative projects. She noted that this is a common, albeit frustrating, aspect of the business where payments are delayed until all production costs and advances are fully recouped by the label. By providing this context, she hopes to demonstrate that the lack of payment is a structural issue rather than a personal oversight. Consequently, Sexxy Red has formally requested to be dismissed from the lawsuit, urging the court to focus the proceedings on the labels and the relevant stakeholders responsible for royalty distribution.
