Ryan Hurd's 'False God' Cover: Listen

Ryan Hurd unveiled his slow-burning rendition of Taylor Swift‘s “False God” with a new video on Tuesday (April 14).

On the cover, the country singer transforms the sensual vibe of the Lover album cut, trading out the original’s saxophone for a wash of drums and echoing guitar. “We might just get away with it/ Religion’s in your lips/ Even if it’s a false god/ We’d still worship/ We might just get away with it/ The altar is your hips/ Even if it’s a false god/ We’d still worship this love,” he croons with a twang on the song’s seductive chorus.

“False God. Thank you @taylorswift13 for the song clinic,” Hurd tweeted alongside the video. “My favorite song off of Lover. We covered this live on Platonic, it felt like a deep dive into someone else’s poetry.”

Swift herself was quick to notice the cover after Maren Morris, Hurd’s wife, shared the video on her social media. “This is incredible,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories, while also replying directly to Hurd’s tweet with “Love this so much.”

This isn’t the first time the new dad — who welcomed baby Hayes Andrew Hurd with Morris late last month — has paid homage to Swift, either. In 2019, he regularly included Reputation deep cut “Dress” on his tour set list.
