Outkast Files Trademark Lawsuit Against Producer Ovrkast

The South has always had something to say, but this latest development in the hip-hop community is as unexpected as it is litigious. The legendary rap duo Outkast has officially filed a lawsuit against the rising artist and producer Ovrkast, alleging that his stage name is “nearly identical” to their own, leading to potential trademark infringement, unfair competition, and breach of contract.

Ovrkast, who has garnered significant industry attention for his production work, recently secured credits on Drake’s For All the Dogs, specifically on the tracks “Red Button” and “The Shoe Fits,” as well as the song “Make Them Pay” from the project Iceman. The legal complaint argues that the similarity between the two names is so pronounced that it risks misleading the public regarding an official affiliation, potentially allowing the younger artist to capitalize on the immense brand equity and legacy established by the iconic duo over the past several decades.

In response to the news, Ovrkast took to Instagram to share a screenshot of a report regarding the lawsuit. He tagged both Andre 3000 and Big Boi in the post, adding the caption, “I thought it was love? (yes this is real).”

The legal filing references a 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, in which Ovrkast addressed the name comparison directly. At the time, he noted that he frequently encountered people who assumed he was trying to emulate the duo, stating, “The worst thing I get is like, ‘The n***a think he Outkast’… It’s like, ‘No, bro. I wasn’t even thinking about Outkast.’ Mad n***as do that shit. They read Ovrkast [as] Outkast.”

The industry reaction has been swift and varied, with several prominent figures expressing disbelief. Vince Staples notably commented on the situation, questioning the nature of the dispute, while others in the hip-hop community have speculated whether the lawsuit might be a form of elaborate satire. According to the current complaint, however, the matter is quite serious; it alleges that a previous agreement had been reached between the parties, in which Ovrkast purportedly agreed to transition to a new moniker, “Overkxst.” As the situation continues to unfold, the music world remains watchful of how this clash between a legendary act and a modern producer will be resolved.
