Jay-Z Addresses 4-Hour Delay at Yankee Stadium Residency
Jay-Z’s three-night residency at Yankee Stadium concluded early Monday after a delayed final performance that began more than three hours behind schedule due to a security incident outside the Bronx venue. The concert, titled Extra Innings, officially commenced shortly after midnight following a temporary closure of the stadium gates.
According to Roc Nation, the delay was necessitated by large groups of individuals without tickets attempting to rush several entrances. This surge prompted security officials and the New York Police Department to halt admission to ensure the safety of the crowd. Once the show finally began, Jay-Z addressed the audience directly to explain the situation.
“Let me explain the delay to you guys,” he stated. “It was like 10,000 people outside, and we closed all the doors, and somebody rushed the door. They closed the door for you guys’ safety and everyone’s safety outside.” He continued, “I don’t want to start the music and people get trampled. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everyone was okay. I appreciate your patience.”
Roc Nation later released a statement confirming that hundreds of individuals without tickets had stormed the area, compromising the safety of peaceful ticketholders. The company, alongside Live Nation and Yankee Stadium, credited law enforcement for prioritizing public safety above all other concerns.
Once the performance was underway, the atmosphere shifted from frustration to celebration. The star-studded event featured appearances by Rihanna, BeyoncĂ©, Pharrell Williams, Usher, and Teyana Taylor, culminating in a fireworks display over the stadium. The residency served as a commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint, underscoring the rapper’s enduring ability to command stadium-sized audiences despite the logistical challenges of the evening.
