It was not long ago that Jay-Z spoke on how battle rap may not be the best thing for hip hop during an interview in the aftermath of the Kendrick-Drake feud. However, now that things are personal, the legendary emcee is back on the offensive.

During his performance with The Roots, Jay-Z freestyled on stage and took shots at a bunch of rappers that have irked him in the last year or so. Nobody was spared. Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tory Lanez, Kanye West, and Dame Dash all found themselves in the crosshairs of his lyrical assault.

Perhaps the most prominent shot was directed at Drake, who had previously taken subliminal jabs at Jay-Z on the track ‘Janice STFU’ from his album Iceman. While Drake did not name him directly, he alluded to ‘Jigga’ and ‘Roc Nation’ in his bars. Jay-Z responded with precision: “The jig is up/N***a I’m up 10/ Wrong chart, champ, you gotta look up again/N****s look up to HOV/I never looked up to them.”

The veteran rapper also addressed his former business partner, Dame Dash, referencing a public incident regarding his dental health, and fired back at Nicki Minaj for her ongoing criticisms of Tidal and Roc Nation. Furthermore, he sent warning shots to Kanye West, suggesting that Ye’s bravado is largely confined to social media rather than reality.

Finally, addressing Tory Lanez, who is currently incarcerated, Jay-Z referenced the legal drama involving Megan Thee Stallion, dismissing the excuses made regarding the incident. To anyone who interpreted his previous comments on battle rap as a sign of weakness, this performance served as a definitive reminder of his lyrical prowess.
