Drake recently opened up to fans in Australia about the deeply personal reason behind his generous giveaways at concerts. During a stop in Melbourne on his Anita Max Win Tour, he shared a heartbreaking story that changed his outlook on performing. The Toronto rapper revealed that a tragedy following his 2024 concert in St. Louis left a lasting impact on him.

Before recounting the incident, he issued a somber warning to the crowd. “I don’t know if you realize it, but tonight, there are 15,000 of us here in Melbourne—all together, all celebrating, all having a good time,” he said. “But I want you to be aware of your surroundings.”

The entertainer then spoke about Laticha Bracero and Alyssa Cordova, a mother and daughter who were struck and killed by a driver while leaving his St. Louis show. He had never shared the story publicly but felt it was time. “There’s a reason I do this,” he explained. “There’s a reason I give away money and gifts during my shows. Maybe if I tell you this story, you’ll understand.”

He recalled how Bracero and Cordova had come to the concert for a night of joy. “They had a great time,” he said. “And as they were leaving, crossing the street outside the arena, a drunk driver hit them. They both passed away. And it f##### me up. It really f##### my mind up to think that we could go from having this much fun, and then just like that, life changes.”

The tragedy, he said, made him more aware of the importance of connection. “We’re all in this room together, but you never know what the person next to you is going through,” he told the crowd. “Someone could be smiling, maybe they’re a little drunk, having a great time—but inside, they could be dealing with something heavy. Maybe they’re in a bad relationship. Maybe their friends are doing them dirty. Maybe they have family problems.”

The driver responsible, 22-year-old Monte Henderson, was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of armed criminal action. He was released on bond the day after his arrest, sparking outrage.

Disturbing footage of the crash spread online, showing Henderson’s Jeep running a red light at over 70 mph before slamming into another car and fatally striking Bracero and Cordova. Court documents revealed his vehicle continued moving until it collided with a second car.

Henderson, who had no prior felonies, later described the crash as a tragic accident through his attorney.
