2023 Grammy Awards Nominations Announced: R&B Edition
The Recording Academy has announced the nominees for its 65th Grammy Awards. Beyoncé earns the most nominations at the 2023 Grammys. The music icon and mogul is up for nine total, including Album of the Year for Renaissance and Song and Record of the Year for “Break My Soul.”
Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical is one of five new Grammy Awards categories. It is the first-ever songwriting category that acknowledges songsmiths beyond the genre-specific fields. It recognizes the “most prolific non-performing and non-producing songwriters for their body of new work released during an eligibility year.”
The recordings had to be released between Oct. 1, 2021, and Sept. 30, 2022, in order to be considered for a Grammy nomination.
Ahead of the Grammy nominations announcement, Rated R&B teamed with The Recording Academy to host a Twitter Spaces conversation encouraging voting members to participate in the first round of voting.
Rated R&B’s Antwane Folk chatted with Len Brown, manager of R&B, rap and reggae at the Recording Academy, about the Academy’s goal to increase voter turnout, clear up misconceptions about round one voting and more.
“I feel like some people feel like if they miss the first round of voting, they can vote in the final round, which is true, they can, but the first round of voting is what determines the nominees and final round determines the winners,” Brown noted of one misconception about the Grammys.
He also talked about resources the Recording Academy provides for members to help increase voter turnout. “We have a Grammy voting guide that we’ve put on grammy.com. That tells members everything they need to know about the first round of voting, including key dates, new categories, how the ballots [have] been upgraded. [We have a] voting support hotline, if anybody’s having any issues logging onto their account or whatever the case is,” Brown said.
The 65th Grammy Awards will air live Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on CBS and stream live and be on demand on Paramount+.
