Usher Shares ‘Boundaries’ He And His Wife Jennifer Set In Their Relationship
Usher believes that boundaries are essential for a thriving relationship.
During an appearance on Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, Usher shared how the singer spoke about how he and his wife Jennifer Goicoechea Raymond, set boundaries to protect their relationship because they both work in the entertainment industry.
Although Jennifer is a successful record executive, the couple made a decision not to work together.
“I definitely rely on her opinion about things,” Usher explained. “She’s an incredible sounding board and brings calm to some of my madness sometimes.”
“But if we had to work together, oh my God, it wouldn’t work. It would damage our relationship,” he added.
Usher shared that this is a “policy” that both have agreed upon.
“If this is a business that you’re in, I’m going to help establish and work on it. But it’s your business, you know, and then we have the things that we do together, but it’s not a mandate,” the R&B legend said. “It’s a choice in a relationship.”
“Your things are your things, my things are. I have something I’m passionate about. I need your support, I need your help, I want to get counsel,” Usher continued. “But those kinds of boundaries established, I think hopefully gonna make this a more sustainable relationship.”
Additionally, the “You Remind Me” singer said that good communication equals a good relationship.
“She understands my language and I understand hers,” he said. “We understand how to hear each other, but more than hearing each other, we know how to listen. It’s one thing to have space to talk, but to have ears to hear, that is the difference in having successful relationships in life, period.”
“And having someone who comes from the world or either the idea of that world and what it takes in terms of dedication and commitment, it actually helps,” Usher added. “It really does help.”
After dating for several years, Usher and Jennifer were married in a ceremony following his performance at Super Bowl LVIII.
The week of the wedding, Usher spoke with People about his love for Jennifer.
“Listen, when you find someone that you know is a great partner, of course, it is an honor and a pleasure to be able to share life with someone who wants to share it with you and loves you, who you are.”
