Magic City Mafia Bring ‘My bittersweet gospel’ to the Spotlight
Billings, Montana, may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of hip-hop, but Magic City Mafia is determined to change that. The rap duo, made up of Mason Quest (known as MCM Malice) and Takoda Guzman, is carving out a space in the music industry with their sound and storytelling. Their latest release My bittersweet gospel features three tracks.
MCM Malice grew up on the south side of Billings, where addiction, gang, and systemic struggles were part of everyday life. For Malice, music became a lifeline. Inspired by legends like 2Pac and N.W.A., he began using rap as a way to process his experiences. “Rap has always been my life,” he says.
His partner in rhyme, Takoda Guzman, brings his hard-earned perspective to the duo. Guzman was adopted into a family where he struggled to feel at home. Guzman began freestyling at just 11 years old in parking lots and classrooms, sharpening his skills and building the foundation for his dream of making it in the rap world.
The opening song “Ru still here?!” sets the tone for the album, blending soulful melodies with poignant lyrics that reflect on personal struggles and triumphs. It invites listeners to engage with their own experiences of faith and resilience.
“Searching for your eyes” shifts to a more uplifting vibe, incorporating rhythmic elements that encourage hope and perseverance. Its catchy chorus resonates with themes of overcoming adversity.
The final song “Magic city” concludes the album on a reflective note, combining heartfelt vocals with a powerful message about love and connection. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community and support in one’s spiritual journey.
