The cause of death of DJ Unk, who was famously known for his iconic hit “Walk It Out”, has been released to the public, TMZ reports.

Sherkita Long-Platt, Unk’s wife, told the outlet that her husband died in his sleep on Friday, January 24 after suffering a heart attack. She also noted that the family is aware of “various rumors going around as to how he died … and she wants people to know the truth.” She wanted to clear up any speculation that his passing was the result of drug use. 

In the official announcement, Sherkita shared the news of his death on Facebook on Friday (January 24). 

“Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”

Born on Nov. 28, 1982, in Atlanta as Anthony Leonard Platt, he began his music career in the late 1990s. He formed Southern Style DJs with DJ Montay and DJ Jelly. The DJ collective was known for throwing parties across Georgia. Eventually, Unk and Montay signed a record deal with  Big Oomp Records in 2000.

In 2006, DJ Unk released Beat’n Down Yo Block! He came to national prominence with his breakout hit single, “Walk It Out.” The classic song peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “2 Step”, his follow-up, single also made it onto the charts and was certified gold.

On Saturday (January 25), many gathered at a park in downtown Atlanta for a candlelight vigil in Platt’s honor. According to videos shared on Facebook, white and blue balloons flew into the sky as each attendee expressed their love for the trailblazing rapper/DJ.

Some even sang along to “Walk It Out” and “2 Step” and embraced each other.
