Almondmilkhunni's 'Bandana': Exclusive
Rising pop-R&B singer Almondmilkhunni premiered her new single “Bandana” on Tuesday (April 7), exclusively to Streets Talkin.
Cleverly built around a sample of Usher‘s 2001 hit “U Remind Me,” the song finds the Philadelphia native seeing more than a few similarities between herself and her ex’s new fling.
“Do you notice somethin’ bout her/ When the light hit?/ Yeah you seem to have a type, yeah/ Guess you kinda biased/ Yeah she vaguely familiar/ Somethin’ I’ve seen before/ Yeah she got somethin’ about her,” the singer — born Brandy Schwechler — croons over booming production before jumping into the track’s chorus.
“The inspiration behind ‘Bandana’ was honestly something I was feeling at that moment,” Schwechler tells Streets Talkin of the song’s origins. “I had just been told about a girl my ex started dating like around the same time we were talking. [I wanted to] address the fact that this guy clearly has a type, because his new girl looks so much like me.”
Schwechler wanted to express her feelings with confidence, but “without putting the other girl down,” she explains. “I’m so happy that the message comes across as still being empowering, with a hint of shade.”
The track arrives just one day ahead of the R&B newcomer’s self-titled debut EP, which is set for release Wednesday (April 8) Almondmilkhunni’s label, Electric Feel Records. The seven-song project will also include previously-released singles “Grapefruit,” “Henni Heartbreak” and “Cherry.”
