Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner’s defamation case against Ray J will continue after a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge rejected the singer’s bid to dismiss the lawsuit. The ruling allows the claims brought by Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner to proceed toward a scheduled May 2028 trial. Ray J, whose legal name is William Ray Norwood Jr., has vowed to appeal the decision.

The plaintiffs sued the entertainer over statements they allege falsely connected them to a federal racketeering investigation. Furthermore, Ray J reportedly suggested that their conduct could be worse than that attributed to Sean “Diddy” Combs. Ray J had sought dismissal by arguing that his statements were protected opinions under the First Amendment and that some remarks were made under the mistaken belief that a livestream had concluded.

However, the court declined to end the case at this stage, finding that a reasonable person could interpret some of the singer’s statements as factual assertions rather than protected opinion. This distinction is critical, as provably false factual statements can support defamation claims, whereas opinions generally receive constitutional protection.

Ray J’s attorney has indicated that the defense will challenge the ruling on appeal. “We will promptly appeal the ruling which failed to recognize Ray J’s First Amendment right to publish his opinion about the despicable behavior of Kim Kardashian,” the attorney stated. The defense further noted that the appeal process would likely freeze the proceedings, casting doubt on the current 2028 trial timeline.

As the case moves into its next phase, the central dispute remains the boundary between protected celebrity commentary and actionable defamation. The court’s latest ruling does not determine liability but ensures that the claims brought by Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner survive the initial dismissal stage.
