Benzino Calls Elliott Wilson ‘My Son’, Says He Copied ‘The Source’
Benzino has some choice words for Elliot Wilson.
During an interview with Big Loon’s It’s Up There Podcast, Benzino spoke about the storied history of The Source magazine. He then accused Wilson of copying the “Bible of Hip-Hop” when he left the company. Benzino also described Wilson as “my son.”
“How can you verse something that copied everything from you? If somebody came in here right now, put a table over there,” Zino asked. “Doing the same thing you were but then calling it something else, what are you gonna say? That’s what they did.”
He went on to say that Willson did not build anything that could compare to his company and that XXL was a “knockoff of The Source.”
The Source co-founder claims Wilson stole ideas from the magazine.
Benzino said, “The Source was a conglomerate.”
“I know clicks and comments but The Source Awards, did Elliott Wilson ever get big with the XXL Awards? Did Elliott Wilson ever do that?… We wasn’t just a magazine,” he continued. “We had TV shows, award shows, multimillion-dollar things, they had a magazine that copied us. And then they got on Eminem’s d*ck, and that was it. That’s the facts.”
After covering hip-hop for several publications, Wilson began working for The Source in 1996. Eventually, he rose to music editor of the magazine. In September 1999, Wilson left The Source to take on the role of editor-in-chief of XXL magazine, and he launched XXLmag.com. Currently, he is the editorial director of Uproxx, HipHopDX, and Dime Magazine.[
While Benzino was highly critical of Wilson, Benzino said he would squash his long-running beef with Eminem “for the culture.” During an interview with Drink Champs, Benzino extended an olive branch to “Slim Shady.”
“There’s a big racist problem in America right now and Eminem could probably stop half of it,” Benzino said. “All he’s got to do is come to the table and that’s the message.”
